Mid Century Modern Sculpted Walnut Two-Drawer Nightstand, c.1960's

Description: This Mid Century Modern two-drawer nightstand, dating to the 1960s, showcases the warmth and expressive grain of walnut in a compact architectural form. Its most distinctive feature is the pair of sculpted drawer fronts, gently curved outward to create integrated handholds while maintaining a clean, hardware-free facade. Tapered legs and shaped supports elevate the rectangular case, giving the piece a lighter profile while providing practical bedside storage. The walnut surfaces highlight natural variations in grain and tone, complemented by the streamlined proportions characteristic of mid-century American furniture. The nightstand was meticulously refinished by our Los Angeles restoration studio, with careful attention to its construction, finish, drawer functionality, and original design character.

Fun Historical Fact

During the 1960s, American furniture makers increasingly incorporated recessed and sculpted drawer fronts as an alternative to traditional knobs and pulls. This approach allowed the wood itself to become both a decorative feature and a functional part of the furniture's design. Walnut was especially well suited to this treatment because its prominent grain could remain visually uninterrupted across broad drawer surfaces. Compact nightstands such as this also reflected the era's growing preference for coordinated bedroom furniture with clean lines, elevated cases, and efficient storage.
