Fun Historical Fact Century Furniture was founded by Harley Ferguson Shuford Sr. in 1947, with its first casegoods factory established in Hickory, North Carolina the following year. During the 1950s and 1960s, Century expanded substantially, including the establishment of its dedicated chair division in 1964. Designer Raymond K. Sobota joined Century in 1952 and helped establish the company as an important American style leader through collections that remained influential for decades. Today, vintage Century casegoods from this era remain particularly appealing for their combination of American manufacturing, substantial construction, and timeless mid-century proportions.
