Description: This striking 1970s dining table by Robert Josten features a highly architectural composition of cast aluminum, black-painted steel, and clear glass. A sculptural aluminum grid beneath the tabletop creates a layered geometric focal point while allowing light to pass through the design. Four slender black steel columns connect the upper structure to a pair of angular cast-aluminum bases, giving the table a bold industrial character without appearing visually heavy. The new round glass top provides a spacious dining surface while preserving a clear view of Josten’s distinctive metalwork below. Retained in original vintage condition with a newly fabricated glass top, this rare table offers a dramatic balance of sculpture, structure, and everyday functionality.

Fun Historical Fact During the 1970s, designers increasingly treated furniture as functional sculpture, combining industrial materials with expressive architectural forms. Cast aluminum was especially appealing because it could be molded into complex shapes while remaining lighter than many traditional metals. Robert Josten’s distinctive grid motif reflects the era’s fascination with exposed structure, repetition, and geometric abstraction. Tables of this type blurred the boundary between furniture design and modern metal sculpture, making the supporting framework as visually important as the tabletop itself.
