Description: This American Chippendale Revival tilt-top table, dating to the 1940's, is crafted in richly finished mahogany and reflects the elaborate decorative vocabulary of traditional Chippendale furniture. The shaped pie-crust top is surrounded by deeply carved foliate ornament and supported by a turned pedestal accented with additional carved detailing. A sculptural tripod base features sweeping cabriole legs, scrolling accents, carved foliage, and distinctive carved feet that give the table an elegant, balanced profile. Brass hardware operates the traditional tilt-top mechanism, allowing the tabletop to be raised vertically when desired. The table retains its original vintage character and has been carefully inspected by our studio for structural stability, secure construction, and proper operation of the tilting mechanism.

Fun Historical Fact

Pie-crust tilt-top tables became fashionable during the 18th century and are particularly associated with sophisticated Chippendale-era furniture produced in Britain and colonial America. Their raised, elaborately shaped borders gave otherwise functional tea tables a highly decorative architectural quality. The tilting mechanism allowed the top to be positioned vertically, making the table easier to move aside or display when it was not being used. Twentieth-century Chippendale Revival makers continued the tradition, reproducing the carved mahogany, tripod bases, and ornamental details associated with celebrated earlier examples.
