Description: Designed by Jens Risom and produced by Knoll Studio, this Model 654LA lounge chair is a later production of one of the most recognizable forms in American Mid-Century Modern furniture. The chair pairs a warm walnut frame with its original woven cotton webbing, creating a striking basket-weave surface that provides both visual texture and flexible support. Slender angular arms, gently tapered legs, and the subtly reclined seat give the chair an exceptionally light architectural profile while maintaining a relaxed and comfortable seating position. The exposed construction and restrained use of materials exemplify Risom’s ability to combine Scandinavian simplicity with the practical spirit of American modernism. Preserved in original vintage condition, this 2000s Knoll Studio production retains its original webbing, finish, and identifying label, making it a handsome and authentic licensed example of this enduring design.

Fun Historical Fact Danish-born designer Jens Risom began working with Hans Knoll in the early 1940s and created the first comprehensive furniture collection commissioned for the newly established Knoll company. The Risom Lounge Chair debuted in the 1940s and became especially recognizable for its ingenious use of broad woven webbing stretched across a simple wood frame. The design reflected Risom’s Scandinavian approach to honest materials and straightforward construction while helping establish the modern design language that would eventually make Knoll internationally renowned. Although this example was produced decades later by Knoll Studio, its “1941” label commemorates the origins of the Risom-Knoll collaboration rather than the manufacturing date of the chair itself.
