Description: This Mid-Century Modern Replogle floor globe from the 1970s pairs a clean, minimalist brass stand with a richly detailed cartographic sphere. The globe was designed under the direction of LeRoy M. Tolman, Replogle’s chief cartographer from the 1950s through the 1980s, whose work defined much of the way Americans visualized the world during the Cold War era. Its geographic details date it between 1971 and 1980, a fascinating moment when countries like Zaire and Rhodesia still appeared on maps before later independence movements reshaped borders. The slender tubular frame reflects the era’s design ethos—functional, geometric, and stylishly understated. As both an educational object and a design statement, this piece captures the intersection of modernist aesthetics and mid-20th-century world history.
Fun Historical Fact: LeRoy M. Tolman began as a young cartographer at Replogle in the mid-20th century and went on to oversee the company’s globe-making for decades.
